A fantastic opportunity is available to work on a stunning estate in Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

The roles exist to manage and maintain the main property on a mixed sporting estate. In addition, the Couple will provide cooking and hosting for shoots and family visits, and will work in harmony with others on the estate to ensure that the family gets full benefit from it.

The estate is a mixed sporting and farming enterprise extending to just over 1,000 acres. There is a fishing syndicate, a sought-after shoot, and a regenerative organic farm on the estate.

Six others are employed on the estate: Head Keeper, Underkeeper, Fisheries & Habitat Manager, two Groundworkers, and a part-time Gardener.

Outline Duties

Keeping The House Ready

  • Although the family are relatively informal in nature, the roles require a Couple who can run the house to a very high standard
  • The Couple need to be familiar with modern property technology or be happy and confident to learn and deal with the appropriate contractors

Cooking & Hosting

  • A high standard of cooking and hosting is required
  • A key responsibility is to cook and serve dinners and lunches for the shoot using high quality ingredients and showing a passion for flavour and creativity
  • Formal dinners catering for up to 16 people may be required in the house, and the Couple will provide food and hosting for guns and shoot staff on approximately 12 Saturdays during the shoot season
  • Some front of house service such as meeting and greeting guests, taking bags, etc, will also be needed
  • The Couple should be welcoming, professional and discreet, and have a bias for customer service

Housekeeping

  • The Couple will do all the hands-on cleaning, laundry and ironing
  • The Couple should be aware if anything in the house needs to be cared for in a specific way (instructions will be provided)
  • A methodical approach to planning workloads is essential
  • There will be frequent periods when the house is not occupied and other periods when the house will be full and fast changeovers needed

Maintenance & Servicing

  • The roles require small DIY jobs to be completed
  • Competence in hanging pictures, changing filters, and other day-to-day domestic maintenance is essential although professional qualifications are not required
  • There is a high level of technology in the main house so a familiarity with or ability to learn about digital systems is important
  • The Couple will need to maintain a daily, weekly, and monthly plan to ensure all elements of maintenance and servicing are covered
  • Security and fire systems must be actively managed
  • The ability to deal with contractors (and to ask them the right questions) is important

External

  • The Couple should maintain and regularly test the external gates, lighting, and CCTV systems as well as monitoring the physical state of the properties and bringing in contractors as necessary
  • The Couple will help with the mowing of the lawns and general garden tidiness, but no specific horticultural skills are required
  • The Couple will maintain and keep clean the family’s car and ATV which are kept at the house

Stocktaking, Managing Spend & Liaison with Family Office

  • The Couple will maintain accurate records of stock and usage so that the Family Office can recharge family members or the shoot as necessary
  • The Couple will be responsible for the purchasing of food, drink, cleaning materials and other consumables, and for managing credit accounts with suppliers
  • The ability to liaise effectively with the Family Office team is critical for maintaining control and trust
  • An inventory must be maintained for the house and other key areas, and stocking of general consumables at the Shoot Rooms/Estate Office on a suitable periodic basis will also be part of the role

Other Key Skills & Character Traits

  • IT literate, knowledge and use of software to manage records, build schedules, manage diaries
  • Digitally savvy, able to operate and fault-find house systems
  • Full driving licences and confidence behind the wheel
  • Basic Food Hygiene and First Aid will be a requirement (but training provided by us if not already held, including up to Advanced levels)
  • Absolute integrity
  • High standards
  • Judgement & the wisdom to know when to seek help or report problems and when to self-solve
  • Good communication skills and a willingness to act as part of the wider estate team
  • Personal warmth, desire to help others
  • Discretion and respect for family and guest privacy
  • Low ego and not hierarchical
  • Ability and desire to build good relationships across the estate and with suppliers, contractors and the Family Office

Working Hours

  • Working hours will be full-time with a mix of weekends and weekdays – more weekends in the shooting season
  • Details to be agreed with the Couple according to what works for all parties
  • Time off is given in lieu of working outside contractual hours

Accommodation

  • Accommodation is a separate 3-bed cottage away from the main house but on the estate in a courtyard that houses a tenanted farmhouse and the Estate Offices
  • The cottage was converted in 2019 and is well finished throughout
  • This will be rent free with utilities paid for – currently part-furnished but furnishing is flexible according to need
  • Pets are not usually considered

Salary:  £75,000-£85,000 Gross + Benefits. DOE. Further details to be confirmed at interview

Driving: It is essential that the Couple can both drive. A car is provided for use in conjunction with the roles
