Our client, with a beautiful shooting estate in Scotland, is looking to recruit a live-in Housekeeper.  The Housekeeper will be provided with stunning separate accommodation, which will be their own 2-3 bedroom lodge on the estate.  The clients are mainly in residence between August-January, and occasionally for fishing during the rest of the year.

The clients do entertain, but only up to small groups of around 12 people.

The Housekeeper's role is to manage, supervise, train and work alongside household staff, thereby ensuring correct standards and practices are maintained.  They should develop a well-ordered routine for daily tasks during family visits, and an in-depth programme to include specific tasks when the house is unoccupied.  They will keep both themselves and house staff busy and motivated through both extremely busy times and also during long spells of non-occupation.  This is a practical, hands-on position.

Daily Duties:

  • Daily opening up procedure - alarms will be unset by the Head Housekeeper; unlock doors, as necessary; switch on (or off) lights as necessary; open and arrange blinds, curtains and shutters; tidy obvious debris from the lower ground and ground floor Reception Rooms; whilst “opening up” check lightbulbs - replace as necessary or call Estate Maintenance if further assistance required.
  • Cleaning and vacuuming of the stairs and landings, usually twice weekly or more frequently if necessary.  (The vacuum should not be used in the Lodge when occupied until everyone is awake).
  • Care of fine furniture and fabrics with the appropriate products.  Wood and marble furniture to be polished as and when required to keep in pristine condition.
  • Ensure that the Laundry Room is always clean and well organised.
  • Closing down procedure: lock doors as necessary; close blinds, curtains and shutters as required; leave on certain lights; switch off unnecessary appliances; set alarm on exit.

General Responsibilities (during family visits):

  • Cleaning, vacuuming and laying the fires within the Lodge.  Estate Maintenance to supply the firewood to be distributed within the Lodge accordingly.
  • Laundry, Boot Room, Gun Room, Drying Room (and associated areas) to be kept clean and tidy at all times.
  • Laundering as follows: family and guest laundry; bed and table linen; to take clothes/linen to the dry cleaners as instructed.
  • Bed linen should be changed at least every four days or more frequently when necessary, and on changeover of guests.
  • Turndown procedure when family/guests in residence: curtains closed, lights on and beds turned down.
  • When family in residence bottled water to be placed in suites and replenished as and when required (sometimes twice daily).
  • Care of outdoor clothing in the Boot Room.
  • Ordering/cancelling newspapers as appropriate for family/guests.
  • Family and guest vehicle washing – arrange with Estate Maintenance.
  • Driving for shopping and other Estate duties as required.
  • Table service.
  • Organising and managing private Lodge functions and shoot lunches in association with Estate Management and relevant staff.

General Responsibilities (between visits):

  • Maintain a programme of thorough, regular ‘Spring Cleaning’ throughout the Lodge.
  • Polish the wooden floors with the help of the Housemaid(s).
  • The cleaning of the inside of the windows including their thresholds. 
  • Instruct the window cleaner to come as and when required to do the exterior of the Lodge.
  • Organise the chimney sweep on an annual basis (at the beginning of August).
  • All taps should be turned on and run, and toilets flushed once a week.
  • Reporting and responsible to the Factor on all administrative matters.
  • Managing the household accounts in conjuction with the Factor.
  • Administration of household activities, eg staff holidays etc, etc.
  • Ensure the cleaning products and toiletry store rooms are sufficiently stocked.  Stock control record to be updated on a monthly basis.
  • Any breakages and damages to items from the household should be reported to The Factor.
  • Close communication with Estate Maintenance and the Factor regarding any maintenance and repairs required.
  • Monitor contractors in the house and ensure their work is carried out in a tidy fashion.
  • Monitor the house perimeter and ensure that paintwork and window ledges are kept clean and cobweb free, and that pathways are swept and tidy at all times.
  • Security: Report any incident details to the Factor.
  • Additional lodges – should be kept clean and tidy at all times as use for overflow / additional accommodation.
  • Lunch Huts – The Housekeeper will ensure that the Lunch Huts are clean and tidy, fires are working and firewood available prior to the shoot season in August.

Hours:  Monday to Friday, 8.00am-4.00pm.  However, during peak times you will be required to work hours required to fulfill the criteria of the position.  It is understood that weekends will be worked during peak times.     

Accommodation: Separate accommodation, 2-3 bedroom lodge.

Salary: £25,000-£30,000 gross per annum
