Live-out House Manager (for cultural reasons, only female candidates will be considered)

An enthusiastic, energetic and proactive House Manager is required for this prime house and grounds.  The property is located near Gerrard’s Cross and sits within its own grounds of about 40 acres. There is a substantial main house, a guest lodge and ancillary staff accommodation.

The property is relatively modern but traditional in design and was refurbished 3-4 years ago to a very high standard.  Occupation of the property will vary but broadly it can be assumed it will be occupied for up to about six months of the year.  There are other members of staff and contractors dealing with the running and maintenance of the property.

Whilst the property is not occupied, the hours are generally 5 days a week 8.00am-5.00pm or 9.00am-6.00pm.  During occupation, however, this is subject to change and will include weekend/public holiday working.  Whilst off site the House Manager will be expected to remain in contact (via work mobile/email) at all times.

The House Manager will report directly to the Clients' managing agent who is based in London. The House Manager will be responsible for overseeing the two Housekeepers and associated staff/contractors. During periods of occupation there will be additional staff members, drivers and so forth to liaise with and generally oversee. Recruitment of temporary staff is also sometimes required.

Duties to be performed include:

Daily Duties:

  • Switch on or off the lights/flood lights as necessary
  • Whilst opening-up check lightbulbs and replace
  • Make a thorough walk-about of the buildings to ensure that everything is in order
  • Low-level dusting: furniture / picture frames / skirting boards / dado-rails / banister & balustrades
  • As rooms are cleaned, the windows should be opened (if weather permits) to air the room; sills and thresholds should be wiped clean as required
  • Note any maintenance problems and report these
  • Monitor pest infestation; act accordingly and report severe incidences
  • Work areas should be left in a tidy and correct fashion at the end of each working day
  • Ensure that the house is properly secure
  • Ensure any Maintenance Works are carried out in accordance with requirements
  • Oversee grounds maintenance team

Weekly Duties:

  • Ensure automatic timers that control lights and water systems etc are correctly set
  • All flooring: should be vacuumed / mopped / buffed as appropriate to the surface
  • Ensure that any houseplants and external formal garden areas receive adequate water and care
  • All taps and water appliances should be run to ensure that water is running clean, and that siphons are full (to avoid bad smells rising).  Leave the plugs open in baths and wash basins during periods of absence
  • Bathroom taps and fittings should be cleaned as per the instruction of the maker; if this is unknown investigate the correct care procedure with the supplier
  • Sweep outside terrace areas & wipe outside furniture
  • Wind and set clocks including digital to correct settings
  • Check all appliances are working, ie stoves, dishwashers, stereo, washing machines, refrigerators, freezers, televisions, audio /visual equipment, AC & heating etc
  • Maintain an inventory of cleaning & household products and ensure that stocks are maintained above minimum levels
  • Check all TV and AV functionality including Client preferred channels etc

Monthly duties

  • Windows should be cleaned both inside and outside – including sills
  • Where not contracted by a specialist contractor, ceiling lights should be dusted and cleaned as required
  • High-dusting: curtain pelmets / curtains / cornices / ceiling ventilators / air-conditioning vents / bookcases / and bed drapes
  • Silver ornaments should be polished using quality silver cleaning foam or liquid polish
  • Brass and copper items need to be cleaned with the appropriate products on a regular basis
  • Clean refrigeration and beverage storage facilities
  • Clean all outside garden furniture as appropriate

A full and thorough inventory check will be required on an annual basis.

Driver with clean driving licence preferred for ease of access to and from the property.

You should have proven longevity and experience as a House Manager or Assistant House Manager with supporting references.

Salary depending on experience to date £40,000-£45,000

Interviews to take place early November with a view to starting before Christmas.
